Improving the energy efficiency of your home begins with an energy analysis. A Home Energy Rating System (HERS) rater can help you begin and get your home on the path towards maximized energy efficiency.

A HERS rater is certified by an accredited HERS Provider to:

• Inspect and test a home, evaluating features established by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET)
• Prepare a comprehensive HERS rating according to the RESNET Mortgage Industry National Home Energy Rating

The Home Energy Rating System

The HERS Index is used to rate homes. The Index is a scoring system established by RESNET in which a home built to the specifications of the HERS Reference Home (based on the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code) scores a HERS Index of 100, while a net zero energy home scores a HERS Index of 0. The lower a home’s HERS Index, the more energy efficient it is.

A certified RESNET HERS rater will conduct a series of tests in your house, including a blower door test, duct test and more.

The rater will inspect:

• Insulation levels
• Ductwork
• Combustion appliances
• Windows and doors
• Water heaters
